I like the look of this, it’s the new hard disc recorder from Sound Devices. 8 tracks this time, four of them with XLR input. It builds on what is good about the 744T and adds useful features like USB keyboard support.

I’ve yet to see one “in the flesh” and the UK price could be a high at the moment but it looks like a fabulous machine.

More info and pictures of all the panels can be found on the Sound Devices website

  1. Would love to do that Keith! I bought the 744T which is a great machine but the 788T looks like it has even more of what I really wanted. Especially with the proper mixer style fader add-on.

  2. I've not used the Ambisonic method of recording but I would imagine that having 8 inputs and 12 tracks on the 788 as compared to 4 inputs / tracks on the 744 would be an advantage.

Adding the CLI-8 controller to provide larger rotary controls is also an option which would benefit most recording situations and that's only available for the 788.

There's much more about the 788T and the other recorders on the Sound Devices website.

For anyone interested in Ambisonic recording, wikipedia is as good a place as any to start. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ambisonics
